The phone rings and suddenly your eyes open wide and your jaw drops! People are coming over! Whether you are getting ready for a showing or are having guests arrive for the holidays, you never know when you might get that unexpected call. This hilarious video captures how we all feel when getting a home ready for guests.
Instead of spinning in circles because you don’t know where to begin, COListings has a simple checklist to help you tidy up your home in no time.
Grab a laundry basket
A laundry basket is the perfect tool to place items that don't belong in the room. Collect as you go and put things away once you get to the room they belong. This way you are not wasting time by putting each item away one by one.
Freshen up the air
Make sure to freshen up the air in your home. Choose non-offensive and mild scents to eliminate smells that can be offensive to other people.
Especially during the holiday season, the kitchen is the center of entertainment and more time is spent there than any other room. Do the dishes, clean off counters and pick up any clutter that doesn't belong. If needed, sweep and/or mop the floor and your kitchen is ready to go.
The living room is another important space where guests gather. You want to make sure it is free of clutter. Dust coffee and side tables, fold and put away blankets, fluff pillows and vacuum or sweep. Now you can quickly move on to the next room.
The dining room
The dining room might just be the easiest to clean up because it is often only used when company is over. Pick up any clutter and add it to the laundry basket. Wipe down the table and chairs, replace the tablecloth if you use one and vacuum or sweep.
Bedrooms and bathrooms
You will want to have all bedrooms and bathrooms tidy and clean. Remove any clutter like dirty towels, toys or clothes. Scrub toilets, sinks and counters. Take out the trash, dust bedroom furniture, make beds, sweep, mop and vacuum the floors.
The entryway is the first thing people see when they walk in so you want to make sure it is clean and welcoming. Pick up clutter and straighten up shoes and coats. If you have an entry closet, clear some room so there is space to hang coats and belongings. Wipe down entry tables and sweep or vacuum.
And just like that, your home is ready! Remember that laundry basket with stuff in it? If there are items still in the basket, hide that puppy. Yes, hide it!
